Let’s back up to November 2005. The setting is Artesia, NM after Cody’s graduation ceremony, we were all in a large room, I asked Cody to point out all the other guys that would be going to Deming, NM as well. He was pointing them all out and when he pointed at one guy I noticed his girlfriend or wife. I wasn’t sure which, but I knew she looked normal and that was all I needed. I walked over to her, introduced myself and said, “You don’t know me, but we are going to be friends.” She probably thought I was insane and over the next 4 years I showed her some of my insane ways for sure.
They were engaged when I met her that day. They got married the next October in Michigan and Cody and I were both lucky enough to be in the wedding. (I told y’all we were going to be friends!) I’m not going to say that she didn’t regret being my friend occasionally. We were so young and I had lots of growing up to do. I should add that I didn’t do this very gracefully.
Along the way we added another girl to the mix and it was awesome. The three of us were thick as thieves! The stories we could share….seriously, we had some great times! We were all newlyweds who lived hours away from family so we made a family. We did holiday meals and traditions. The three of us shared the experience of expanding our families at the same time. We added a baby girl in December of 2007, a little boy in February 2008, and Coen came in March 2008. We truly went through so very life changing things together. Shortly after our babies were born the other girls left me. One moved to NY and the other to Maine. I couldn’t be mad though, they were moving closer to ‘home’.
The fall of 2008 was the last time the three of us got together. Coen and I flew out to NY and jumped in the car with friend #1 and we took a road trip that would change mine and Cody’s life. Her and I (oh and two babies) drove through Canada and to the very tip of Maine for a stay with friend #3! It was a blast! On the way back to NY we drove through the states. Cody told me to check out some of the northern Border Patrol stations. We did, and that’s when I fell in love with Rangeley, ME! I had no idea that in just a few months Cody and I would be moving there, but we did!
Lets add several more kids to the mix. The girl I singled out at the graduation ceremony now has a total of 4 and I have 3. Her and her family are driving our way as I write this! I haven’t seen her since January 2010! I can’t tell you how excited Cody and I are to see this family. The friendships we have made along this journey are ones that will last a lifetime and ones that will survive tough situations. I am so glad that she took a chance on the crazy Texan who forced her to have a friendship. I am also glad that she doesn’t hold those years in Deming against me! LOL (but seriously)
Wish family #3 was coming! Maybe next time…..
